Our track of the week is ‘I Love You More Than You Love Yourself’, it sounds like a soothing slap, and is taken from Austra’s sensational new album Future Politics (out now on Domino). Fans of Depeche Mode synth grooves and Bjorky operatics are sure to love it.

Track of the Week

‘Wild Fire’ by Laura Marling

Proving that age ain’t nothin’ but a number, Laura Marling once again delivers something with the heft and heart of artists three times her years. This track is taken from Semper Femina, her first release since leaving the major label system, and with this newfound freedom you can hear her melodies and production fluttering into ever more exciting corners, leaving her gliding on that course to become the greatest living songwriter.

#IndependentMusicMonday’s Tracks of the Year: 2016 Edition

Every Monday throughout 2016 we have compiled the week’s best new releases. We’ve featured over 1000 tracks, which you can find compiled in our Archive Spotify playlist.

It’s been a real joy rummaging through the new releases from Independent labels throughout this year, and I hope that this best of the year playlist featuring 70 of my favourites gives you a taste of some of what a great year it has been. LISTEN to the IMM tracks of the year playlist on Spotify here.

Track of the Year: ‘Three Sides of Nazareth’ by Nicolas Jaar

A pummelling beat and children chattering and tiger-growlin’ greets you at the start of this almost ten-minute masterpiece. Jaar has seemingly thrown his downbeat hyper-dub trunk off a cliff and whilst diving behind it into the infinite abyss he’s managed to make one of biggest floor-fillers of the year. If anyone was going to soundtrack a Party in the Sky, with lightning flickering at your feet, then you could bet Jaar would do it. Of course, it remains a production masterclass with the slinky, snarling, super-smart, shape-shifting, almost philosophical exercise. It’s a voyage that revels in making your synapses shake as much as your hips, but boy oh boy, if this isn’t one of the songs of the year then you better hurry up and tell me what is better than this utter bliss. “I found my broken bones by the side of the road…”

Julia Jacklin, Kate Tempest, The Anchoress, Ani Difranco, You Me At Six, NOFX, and lots more on this week’s #IndependentMusicMonday

Every Monday the editor of Drowned in Sound compiles a playlist celebrating the best new releases from Independent labels. The concept is a little like those New Music Friday playlists that you might be aware of, but on a Monday, and with no major labels.

Each week, we compile 20-50 new releases from independent labels and independent artists. Some tracks arrived online in the past few days, whilst others are cuts from albums that were released on Friday.

Track of the Week

‘Coming Of Age’ by Julia Jacklin

Julia Jacklin has got that vibe. You know the one, where country music fades into indie-rock. Where First Aid Kit meets Sharon Van Etten. That little bit of film grain on a photo of a field full of straw. Is it alt-country? Is it Americana? Does it really matter. Her debut album Don’t Let The Kids Win was released by Polyvinyl & Transgressive on Friday to rapturous reviews and with tracks like this, it’s easy to see why.

Every Monday the editor of Drowned in Sound compiles a playlist celebrating the best new releases from Independent labels. The concept is a little like those New Music Friday playlists that you might be aware of, but on a Monday, and with no major labels.

Each week, we compile 15-30 new releases from independent labels and independent artists. Some tracks arrived online in the past few days, whilst others are cuts from albums that were released on Friday.

Track of the Week

‘Give Me Your Gun’ by Marissa Nadler

Marissa Nadler has always had a way of haunting everything she touches. Her voice is rich with its own ghostly wisp whilst her melodies swirl and swirl until time stands still like a frozen waterfall. She’s one of the most consistently brilliant musicians in the world and we’re lucky to have her. Those of a fragile disposition should investigate her new EP of home-recordings Bury Your Name (out now on Bella Union) and her entire back catalogue at your peril, as it’s quite likely you’ll get utterly obsessed and begin to forget that other music exists.

Furnaces by Ed Harcourt (Dir. Matt Mahurin)

Ed Harcourt says: “Meet Furnaceman and his claw of despair. He loves Trump, oil & money. Probably adores guns and hates your God too. Whattaguy.”

#8: The Anchoress on her complex, concept-driven debut album

Danielle Perry chats to The Anchoress aka producer, songwriter, author, and PhD, Catherine Anne Davies, about her critically-celebrated (see below) debut album Confessions of a Romance Novelist, which is out now via post-progressive independent label Kscope.

The Anchoress will perform her debut album in full at London’s most ornate Edwardian Ballroom, The Bush Hall, on Weds June 15th 2016. In the run up to this special event, we thought this in-depth album commentary that explores the concepts behind the album and the recording process would be a great way to prepare yourself for the show.

CRITICAL PRAISE

…And here’s what the critics had to say about her debut album.

☆☆☆☆ MOJO

“…addresses the peaks and troughs of love, commitment and betrayal…Fascinating.” SUNDAY TIMES

“…a rich and complex debut…a blackly witty breakup album…Compelling.” THE OBSERVER

“…equal parts prog and pop, oddball & accessible.” NME

“…a flawless and sophisticated hyper-literate pop record.” GQ

“…insightful, intelligent songwriting on this hugely entertaining album . 9/10.” THE LINE OF BEST FIT

“…hyper-literary but radio-friendly debut. A record which could sneak big ideas past the listeners of daytime radio.” Q

“…literate and emotive. Karen Carpenter singing John Grant.” UNCUT

“…rich and satisfyingly poptastic.” THE QUIETUS

ANOHNI, Radiohead, Julianna Barwick,...

independentmusicmonday:

ANOHNI, Radiohead, Julianna Barwick, Marissa Nadler, The Associates, and lots more on this week’s #IndependentMusicMonday

Every Monday the editor of Drowned in Sound compiles a playlist celebrating the best new releases from Independent labels. The concept is a little like those New Music Friday playlists that you might be aware of, but on a Monday, and with no major labels. Our 50-song playlist focuses on the best new tracks and albums released by independent labels and independent artists, with a weekly selection of twenty plus new additions that have arrived on streaming services in the past seven days.

Track of the Week

For a long while Marissa Nadler has shuffled away in the shadows, building up a back catalogue of consistently brilliant albums. Her music sits an a dark hinterland, somewhere between Carol King and The Cure. At times, this gothic splendour could easily have her confused for Lana Del Rey’s sister, but there’s something far more psychedelic and far-out about her spidery-web of songs. ‘Katie I Know’, from her forthcoming seventh album Strangers (out May 20th via Bella Union) offers fans old and new a dusty window into Marissa’s world where melodies flutter through oily grooves. Having heard the album, it’s little wonder critics are already talking about an album of the year contender and she’s recently featured on the cover of The Wire. She’s a true talent and her time to step out from the shadow of endless critical praise is nigh.

New Album Releases

Friday 6th May 2016 offered an interesting selection of new releases - one of the best weeks of the year so far, maybe. Hopefully a certain band from Oxford won’t overshadow these too much.

Recommended Album of the Week: ANOHNI Hopelessness (Rough Trade)

The Duke Spirit -	KIN	(Ex Voto Records)
Julianna Barwick - Will	(Dead Oceans)
LUH - Spiritual Songs for Lovers to Sing	(Mute)
Radiohead -	A Moon Shaped Pool	(XL)
RY X - Dawn	(Infections)
Shit Robot - What Follows	(DFA)
Spookyland - Beauty Already Beautiful	(Play It Again Sam)
The Associates - The Very Best of the Associates	(Metro)
White Lung - Paradise	(Domino)
Willow -	Zacht	([PIAS] Belgium)

Brian Eno, Kate Jackson, Yeasayer,...

independentmusicmonday:

Brian Eno, Kate Jackson, Yeasayer, Mogwai, Moderat, New Order, and lots more on this week’s Independent Music Monday

Every Monday the editor of Drowned in Sound compiles a playlist celebrating the best new releases from Independent labels. The concept is a little like those New Music Friday playlists that you might be aware of, but on a Monday, and with no major labels.

Track of the Week

‘The Ship’ by Brian Eno is 21 minutes of bliss to escape into. According to the inventor of ambient, it’s a piece about the Titanic… although with its funereal and side two of Low feel, part of me wonders whether it might be a something written in the shadow of Bowie, as a sort of transatlantic tribute… but perhaps the egg hunt for Bowie-isms is getting a little much.

Eno said:

“The piece started as an Ambient work intended for a multichannel sound installation in Stockholm, but during the making of it I discovered that I could now sing a low C - which happens to be the root note of the piece. Getting older does have a few fringe benefits after all. From that point the work turned into an unusual kind of song … a type I’ve never made before where the vocal floats free, untethered to a rhythmic grid of any kind.”

The track is taken from the forthcoming album The Ship which is released on Warp on April 29th. Alongside the song ‘The Ship’, there’s a three-tiered suite entitled 'Fickle Sun’, which includes Eno’s cover of the Velvet Underground’s 'I’m Set Free’. Of the Lou Reed-penned classic, Eno says it “seems even more relevant now than it did then.”

New Tracks from Forthcoming Albums

The past week being a short 4-day week after the Easter holidays hasn’t seen loads of new tracks teased out, but today we’ve been treated to a new cut from Kate Jackson’s forthcoming solo album from the iconic former Long Blonde singer, written and produced with the legendary Bernard Butler. Her debut album, British Road Movies, will be released on 20th May 2016 via Hoo Ha Records/PIAS.

This week also saw new tracks from forthcoming albums by bedroom floor-filler Gold Panda, emo-leaning Nordic sorts Slotface (fka Slutface), key-thumping rockers Black Honey, electro-maestros Digitalism, and the eerie 'Black Phase’ from Tim Hecker.

New Album Releases

Friday April 1st saw a barrage of new releases from independent labels, which you can try before you pick up a nice slab of wax on this week’s playlist:

Recommended Album of the Week: Hammock Everything and Nothing

Are you new to our playlist? Welcome along if so.

What we do is make a playlist every Monday of the best new releases on Independent labels. It’s a bit like those New Music Friday playlists, but on a Monday, and with no major labels (except a few fall in the grey area of being distributed in some countries by major labels, but it all gets a bit complicated….).

The playlist consists of 50 songs hand-picked by the editor of Drowned in Sound, about 20 or so new additions each week. These are both tracks/singles added to streaming services in the past week or from albums which were just released. Expect everything from melacholic pianos to Scandi-pop bangers via gritty hip-hop and deathly metal riffs.

New Tracks from Forthcoming Albums

The Kills don’t appear to have lost that vampiric bite since they went away. ‘Doing It To Death’ slipped online last week alongside confirmation of the duo’s new album Ash & Ice (pictured above) on June 3rd through Domino Records. Watch the video and pre-order your copy here.

This week, Fear of Men’s haunting ‘Island’ arrived from Jessica Weiss’s forthcoming album Fall Forever. Apt for this playlist, she described the track as an “anthem to independence”. The new album is out on the 3rd June, through the Kanine label. and you can order a special limited edition golden vinyl edition from her website.

Also this week we had the slighty bonkers first taste of the new album from M83, another teaser from the forthcoming Yeasayer album plus tracks from Joey Bada$$, El Perro Del Mar, Innerspace Orchestra, RY X, Explosions in the Sky, Hammock, Haelos, YILA, The Dandy Warhols, The Boxer Rebellion, Guy Andrews, Cate Le Bon, Aurora, Lonely The Brave, Junk Son, and Bodhi plus a Disclosure remix of Flume’s 'Never Be Like You’.

Really taken aback by that suite of songs at the heart of the record. A really special band who are far too easy to dismiss. This is quite likely to be one of my albums of the year.
